Rooftop Waterproofing in Cronulla: What 200m² of Failed Membrane Looks Like Up Close

Cronulla sits right on the coast. Salt air, summer storms, and the kind of UV exposure that ages a waterproofing membrane faster than almost anywhere else in Sydney. When a rooftop membrane starts failing down here, it doesn't give you much warning, water shows up on a ceiling below a balcony or podium and by then the damage has usually been building for years. We removed around 200m² of failed membrane from the rooftop, stripping out old coatings, deteriorated adhesives, spent sealants, and any substrate that had gone soft underneath. One month on site, seven specialists. Getting all of it out matters. A new system laid over a compromised surface will fail again inside a couple of years and you'll be back to square one. Once the deck was bare, we checked the slab properly. Cracks were cut and filled, loose material was ground back, surfaces were cleaned, fillets formed at junctions, bond breakers installed, and the deck primed. The new membrane went down to AS 4654.2 and the NCC, following the manufacturer's spec to the letter. Building painting was completed alongside the waterproofing works.

Where Cronulla Rooftops Actually Fail

Most leaks don't start in the middle of a slab. They start at an edge, a drain, a pipe penetration, or a doorway, the detail work. Coastal buildings in Cronulla and the southern beaches have the added pressure of salt-laden air accelerating the breakdown of membrane systems at exactly those points. The upturns, corners, and movement joints are where this job needed the most attention, and that's where we spent the most time. Get the detail wrong and the rest of the membrane doesn't matter.

Why the Substrate Preparation Took as Long as the Membrane

Pulling the old membrane reveals what was underneath it. On this job, the substrate had deteriorated in sections, soft spots, cracking, areas where moisture had been sitting long enough to compromise the slab surface. Every one of those areas had to be addressed before the new system went down. Skipping that step is how you end up back on the same roof in three years. The preparation phase on a job like this takes as long as it needs to, and not a minute less.
