Outdoor Facilities Redevelopment in Waterloo: School Grounds Rebuilt in Two Stages

School grounds in inner Sydney don't have much room to spare. Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Waterloo is a working school, students and staff using every part of the site every day. When the outdoor facilities needed a full redevelopment, the job had to be planned around the school calendar, delivered in stages, and handed over without disrupting education any more than necessary.

Outdoor Facilities Redevelopment

We were engaged as principal contractor and delivered the full scope across two distinct stages. Ten months on site, 22 specialists. The works covered a new car park to improve traffic flow and drop-off safety on what is already a busy Waterloo street, a multi-purpose tennis and basketball court to support the school's sports program, a modernised playground with seating and drinking bubblers, and substantial retaining walls to manage the site's level changes. Site preparation, drainage, landscaping, and compliance with education sector standards all ran alongside the construction works.

Two-Stage Delivery Around a Live School

You can't shut a school down for ten months. The two-stage program was designed to keep disruption contained, completing sections of the grounds before opening them back up, then moving into the next area. Noise management during class hours, safe exclusion zones for students, and coordination with the school leadership every step of the way. A school site is not a standard commercial job. The people using it are children, and that changes how every decision gets made.

Retaining Walls and What the Site Level Changes Demanded

The site at Our Lady of Mt Carmel isn't flat. The level changes across the grounds needed substantial retaining walls before the car park, court, and playground could be built to a usable standard. Get the retaining structure wrong and everything built on top of it is compromised. The engineering here was done properly from the start, walls designed for the loads they'd carry and the ground they'd sit in.
